Summer Ball Update #4: Austin Knight Stays Hot for Kalamazoo

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. –  Tennessee freshman infielder Austin Knight continued his string of solid performances offensively for the Kalamazoo Growlers in the Northwoods League this week.

USA Baseball Collegiate National Team (Team Website)
LHP Garrett Crochet
Season Stats: 2 App, 0 GS, 0-0, 0.00 ERA, 4.0 IP, 0 R, 3 H, 3 BB, 4 K, 1.50 WHIP
 
Crochet had three strikeouts and allowed just one hit in two scoreless innings for the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team against the Coastal Plain League Select Team on July 1.
 
Despite two solid outings with the Red, White and Blue, Crochet was not named to the team's 26-man roster for 19th USA vs. Chinese Taipei International Friendship Series.
 
Cape Cod League (Full League Stats)
OF Zach Daniels – Orleans Firebirds
Season Stats: 19 GP, 5 R, 8 H, 1 2B, 1 3B, 4 RBI, 1 BB, 23 K, .167 AVG, .184 OBP, .229 SLG
 
Daniels had two hits and scored twice in a 7-5 victory over Hyannis on July 2 and drove in a pair of runs with a double in a loss at Wareham on July 5.
 
LHP Will Heflin – Harwich Mariners
Season Stats: 5 App, 0 GS, 1-0, 1 SV, 0.58 ERA, 15.1 IP, 1 R, 1 ER, 8 H, 4 BB, 18 K, 0.78 WHIP
 
Heflin allowed his first run of the summer in a 3-2 loss to Chatham on July 2. The lefty still had four strikeouts in 2.2 innings pitched in the outing. Heflin responded with a dominant performance on Sunday, tossing 4.1 shutout innings while giving up just two hits and striking out a pair of batters against Falmouth. The Morristown, Tenn., native ranked second on the team in innings pitched and has the second lowest ERA on the team among pitchers with at least 10 innings of work.
 
RHP Sean Hunley – Brewster Whitecaps
Season Stats: 3 App, 2 GS, 1-1, 10.56 ERA, 7.2 IP, 11 R, 9 ER, 16 H, 2 BB, 6 K, 2.35 WHIP
 
Hunley had a rough outing in his last appearance, allowing five runs in a 12-7 loss at Falmouth on July 2.
 
OF Alerick Soularie – Brewster Whitecaps
Season Stats: 9 GP, 7 R, 6 H, 1 2B, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 4 BB, 5 K, 1 SB, .207 AVG, .303 OBP, .345 SLG
 
Soularie finished his time in the Cape with seven runs, six hits, a double, a home run and two RBI in nine games for the Whitecaps.    
 
RHP Chase Wallace – Orleans Firebirds
Season Stats: 7 App, 0 GS, 1-0, 3.46 ERA, 13.0 IP, 6 R, 5 ER, 14 H, 9 BB, 13 K, 1.77 WHIP
 
Wallace struck out three batters in 1.2 innings to pick up his first win of the summer as the Firebirds earned a 7-5 victory over Hyannis on July 2. In his most recent appearance, the Sevierville native did not allow a hit in two scoreless innings of relief in a loss to Yarmouth-Dennis on Sunday.
 
California Collegiate League (Full League Stats)
OF Justin Ammons – Conejo Oaks
Season Stats: 17 GP, 9 R, 17 H, 5 2B, 7 RBI, 12 BB, 8 K, 5 SB, .258 AVG, .380 OBP, .333 SLG
 
Ammons recorded only three hits in six games last week but bettered his on-base percentage significantly by drawing seven walks in that span. His .380 on-base percentage ranks fourth on the team. The Memphis native had hits against the Academy Barons (July 3), the Ventura County Pirates (July 5) and the Orange County Riptide (July 7).
 
INF Pete Derkay – Arroyo Seco Saints
Season Stats: 9 GP, 5 R, 7 H, 1 2B, 1 HR, 4 RBI, 9 BB, 8 K, .259 AVG, .444 OBP, .407 SLG
 
Derkay went 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored on July 5 against San Luis Obispo to extend his reached-base streak to seven games. In his most recent outing, the Georgia native drew two walks and scored a run against the Blues on Monday. Derkay currently ranks second on the team with a .444 on-base percentage.
 
INF Max Ferguson – Orange County Riptide
Season Stats: 6 GP, 2 R, 3 H, 1 RBI, 4 BB, 3 K, 2 SB, .176 AVG, .333 OBP, .176 SLG
 
Ferguson walked and scored a run in his summer-league debut against Santa Barbara on July 3. The Florida native recorded his first hit of the summer on July 6 versus the Academy Barons and went 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI against Conejo on July 7.  
 
INF Luc Lipcius – Arroyo Seco Saints
Season Stats: 4 GP, 3 R, 3 H, 3 RBI, 2 BB, 5 K, 1 SB,  .188 AVG, .278 OBP, .188 SLG
 
Lipcius did not see action last week. He went 2-for-5 with a run and an RBI in his second game of the summer against Conejo on June 8. Lipcius followed that with another hit and two runs scored against Orange County on June 9.
 
INF Trey Lipscomb – Orange County Riptide
Season Stats: 7 GP, 4 R, 3 H, 2 RBI, 3 BB, 4 K, 2 SB, .150 AVG, .261 OBP, .150 SLG
 
Lipscomb drew a walk but did not record a hit in his five plate appearances last week for the Riptide.  
 
C Connor Pavolony – Santa Barbara Foresters
Season Stats: 15 GP, 8 R, 11 H, 2 2B, 3 RBI, 8 BB, 16 K, .239 AVG, .397 OBP, .283 SLG
 
Pavolony doubled and scored a run against San Luis Obispo on July 6 after going 0-for-3 against Orange County on July 4. The Georgia native has also thrown out six base stealers this summer.
 
RHP Elijah Pleasants – Academy Barons
Season Stats: 7 App, 2 GS, 0-0, 2 SV, 2.46 ERA, 18.1 IP, 11 R, 5 ER, 13 H, 6 BB, 21 K, 1.04 WHIP
 
Pleasants posted a quality start on July 5 against Santa Barbara, giving up an earned run on two hits and four walks in five innings pitched. The lanky freshman right hander struck out three batters in the outing as well. Pleasants has the lowest ERA on the team among players with eight or more innings pitched.
 
OF Evan Russell – Arroyo Seco Saints
Season Stats: 11 GP, 9 R, 5 H, 2 2B, 7 RBI, 10 BB, 9 K, 5 SB, .128 AVG, .320 OBP, .179 SLG
 
Russell drove in three runs with a bases-clearing double and also drew a walk against San Luis Obispo on July 3 but struggled for the remainder of the week.
 
OF Christian Scott – Arroyo Seco Saints
Season Stats: 19 GP, 12 R, 16 H, 3 2B, 3 3B, 5 RBI, 3 BB, 16 K, 7 SB, .229 AVG, .289 OBP, .357 SLG
 
Scott had recorded a hit in six of his past eight games with a plate appearance, including an RBI triple against the Academy Barons on July 7. He is also currently tied for second on the Saints with seven stolen bases.
 
Coastal Plain League (Full League Stats)
INF Jake Rucker – Forest City Owls
Season Stats: 16 GP, 11 R, 12 H, 4 2B, 1 HR, 6 RBI, 7 BB, 16 K, 3 SB, .218 AVG, .317 OBP, .345 SLG
 
Rucker has posted back-to-back two-hit games for the Owls. On July 5 against Gastonia, the freshman infielder doubled and scored two runs to snap a four-game hitless streak. One day later, Rucker hit his first home run of the summer and scored two more runs in a 14-10 setback against High Point-Thomasville.
 
Northwoods League (Full League Stats)
INF Austin Knight – Kalamazoo Growlers
Season Stats: 14 GP, 15 R, 16 H, 1 2B, 1 HR, 12 RBI, 11 BB, 11 K, 7 SB, .320 AVG, .435 OBP, .400 SLG
 
Knight stayed hot at the plate last week, racking up nine hits and five RBI in seven games for the Growlers. The Florida native had his eight-game hit streak snapped on Monday at Rockford after three straight multi-hit games. In a doubleheader sweep against Kokomo on July 5, Knight combined to go 4-for-6 with a double, three runs scored and two RBI. Knight has reached base in all 14 games he's played in this summer.
 
RHP Tanner Kohlhepp – Eau Claire Express
Season Stats: 5 App, 5 GS, 1-1, 6.95 ERA, 22.0 IP, 25 H, 18 R, 17 ER, 14 BB, 22 K, 1.77 WHIP
 
Kohlhepp fell to 1-1 for the summer after a tough start on July 4 against La Crosse. The freshman right hander racked up eight strikeouts but surrendered six runs on seven hits and seven walks in 3.1 innings of work.
 
Ohio Valley League (Full League Stats)
C Matthew Ellis – Dubois County Bombers
Season Stats: 18 GP, 10 R, 22 H, 5 2B, 1 HR, 15 RBI, 1 BB, 14 K, .324 AVG, .342 OBP, .441 SLG
 
Ellis is riding a five-game hit streak for the Bombers. The Kentucky native had two doubles and scored twice against Paducah on July 5 and followed that with another double and an RBI against the Chiefs on July 6. Ellis leads the Bombers with five doubles, ranks third on the team with 15 RBI and is fourth on the team with a .324 batting average.
 
Hamptons League (Full League Stats)
Landon Gray – Westhampton Aviators
Season Stats: 17 GP, 8 R, 17 H, 2 2B, 1 HR, 12 RBI, 13 BB, 13 K, 5 SB, .333 AVG, .478 OBP, .431 SLG
 
Gray had his second straight solid week at the dish, totaling seven hits and five RBI in five games for the Aviators. The junior from Granbury, Texas has a hit in five straight games and seven of his last eight. Gray went 2-for-2 with a walk, two runs scored and two RBI in a loss at Shelter Island on July 3. He also had a pair of hits and drove in three runs in a 5-3 victory over the Riverhead Tomcats on Sunday before going 1-for-3 with two walks and a run scored on Monday against North Fork.
